An injured Zehrs worker has hired a Windsor law firm to search for witnesses after a crash. Joanna Sweet, Managing Partner at Greg Monforton & Partners has been retained by Reynaldo Melendez, 42. He was seriously injured on Oct. 20, after an SUV crashed through the front window of the grocery store on Malden Road. “Reynaldo is very seriously injured and is still in hospital recovering from multiple issues including surgery, a significant head injury, spinal fracture and other fractures,” Sweet is quoted in a law firm news release. “He was quietly sitting at work and without warning he was unbelievably mowed down by an SUV that crashed through the front window of the cafeteria.” Sweet told CTV News Melendez was pinned underneath the SUV until he was rescued by first responders. Her law firm is investigating at the request of the Melendez family to “...get to the bottom of what happened and why.” “I like to find out everything I can about the situation. And in this day and age, there are a lot of cameras out there. There are a lot of eyewitnesses,” Sweet said. “The nature of a civil lawsuit is different than criminal. And so sometimes I’m looking for a little bit of different information. And so, it’s very helpful anyone who has any knowledge to come forward.” Sweet asks witnesses to call her office at 519-258-6490. She acknowledges this is the very early stages of her involvement in Melendez’s case. “In any civil action the person has two years from the date of loss to file, their statement of claim at the Superior Court of Justice. So, there’s a lot of time here,” Sweet said. She said they are considering a civil lawsuit, but won’t say if Zehrs LaSalle or its parent company Loblaw will be named as defendants. LaSalle Police have charged a 73-year-old LaSalle woman with careless driving causing bodily harm.
