Food insecurity climbing for some Canadians and local two local credit unions are stepping up to help. Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) partnered with Comtech Fire Credit Union ON Friday to expand their third annual food drive to 16 communities across Ontario - from Timmins to Windsor. The donation drive kicked off in Windsor at The Great Canadian Superstore on Walker Road where volunteers collected donations for The Downtown Mission – a registered charity organization. Colton Boros is the branch manager of YNCU in Windsor. Boros and the YNCU are committed to giving back to Windsor – especially those who are the most vulnerable, experiencing economic challenges that makes it hard to put food on a table. “We’re also donating $2,500 to help fill the food bank up and help with the downtown mission’s operation for the thanksgiving,” said Boros. “And so hopefully we can just help a lot of people have a much better thanksgiving in Windsor.” Last year the drive benefitted from generous donations made by the community with over 1,700 pounds of nonperishables collected. All donations this year will help restock The Downtown Mission’s shelves that are constantly in need of re-supply due to an increasing local need. The Mission is accepting year-round monetary donations, non-perishables, new feminine hygiene products and gently used or worn clothing for all ages – especially shoes, boots, gloves, mitts and hats for winter.
