Amid a recent burst of bitterly cold Arctic air, the Downtown Mission of Windsor is preparing for its Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser to help support the city’s most in need of support. On Feb. 28, 2026, the Mission will host its annual Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraiser. Walkers of all ages will get to choose between two kilometer and five-kilometre route options, with a fundraising goal of $125,000. So far the Mission has raised $37,000. “It’s cold out there, and this weather reminds us just how critical our programs are during the winter months,” said Downtown Mission of Windsor Executive Direction Rukshini Ponniah‑Goulin. “Every day and night, people in our community depend on us for warmth, meals, safety, and hope. The Coldest Night of the Year walk is one of the most important ways the community can help ensure we have the resources needed to respond —especially during extreme cold like we’re seeing now.” According to the Mission, extreme cold weather such as what’s been plaguing southern Ontario has of late increases the need for warm meals, safe shelter, essential supplies, and compassionate support, therefore increasing demand on the Mission’s services. As a result, “community support through cold‑weather fundraising is so vital.” Last year, the community helped the Mission raise $125,865, engaging 57 teams, 357 walkers, and 75 volunteers. “With strong early momentum this year, the Mission is hopeful to surpass those numbers in 2026,” the release reads. Money raised from the event will go towards providing people with warm meals, shelter, essential supplies and hygienic items, and supportive programs to help people get back on their feet. “When you participate in CNOY, you’re not just walking,” added Ponniah‑Goulin. “You’re helping ensure no one in our community feels forgotten, ignored, or alone, especially during the coldest, most dangerous time of year.”
