HOBBEMA, Alta. - Several hundred people have attended a wake for a five-year-old boy who was killed by a bullet shot into his bedroom on the Samson Cree First Nation earlier this week.

Five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird was hit in the head by the gunshot on Monday morning while he slept.

So far no arrests have been made.

RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb says investigators are respecting the family's right to grieve, and won't be interfering with any witnesses who wanted to attend Thursday's service.

But he says they will continue with the investigation on Friday, interviewing people and canvassing neighbourhoods.

Webb says police have had a mixed reaction from residents so far, with some eager for the crime to be solved and others turning officers away at the door.

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach has said there needs to be more community involvement after the shooting.

The Hobbema-area reserve has been battling a problem with gang-related violence.

The child was the grandson of reserve Chief Marvin Yellowbird.

Assembly of First Nations Chief Shawn Atleo has said aboriginal communities must take care of their future generations.
