MONTREAL - Most video games in Quebec should be available in French by 2009 after an agreement between the industry and a provincial language watchdog.

The Entertainment Software Association of Canada says the deal with the Office quebecois de la langue francaise will result in significant costs for its members.

The language group said Monday it believes that more than 80 per cent of video games in Quebec will be available in French in 2009, compared with about 40 per cent right now.

Gamers in Quebec have long complained that many of their favourite games are available only in English.

The language watchdog received 262 complaints in 2005-2006 about unilingual computer programs, including video games.
