The 22-year-old victim of a horrific sexual assault in front of her toddler son attended a community rally for her Sunday and says she's "getting better."

"I'm doing good . . . I'm not getting dizzy spells anymore or anything like that. I'm getting better and I'm getting more and more energy everyday," the woman, who cannot be identified, told CTV News.

The woman suffered severe cuts to her head in an attack that allegedly lasted over 12 hours in a second-hand shop, where she was bound, sexually assaulted and beaten with a hammer in front of her son.

Many of the 200 people who attended the rally in downtown Penticton, B.C. did not realize the victim was in their midst.

The young woman thanked them for showing up, strangers and friends, alike.

"Right now I just want to say thank you. I can't believe how many people have come together for this," she said.

She attended the rally with her 22-month-old son and the father of the young boy says the child appears to have "no recollection of anything" relating to the incident.

Reasha Wolfe of the Penticton Women's Centre said it was important for the community to show its support.

"We had to come together and put something together for the family to see how much we support them and for the community to have a chance to process these complex feelings and to take back our neighbourhood," Wolfe said.

Police have arrested and charged David Wesley Bobbitt with attempted murder. Further charges have been recommended to the Crown.

Bobbitt appeared in court Thursday, which quickly turned into an obscenity-laden argument between the accused and onlookers.

Bobbitt's case has been put over to Aug. 31 so he can undergo a psychiatric assessment.
