Vancouver Island wildfire pilot honoured across Colorado as his body returns home after fatal crash

Along a stretch of Colorado highway thousands of kilometres from home, firefighters, police officers and community members stood silently Monday to say goodbye to Sooke, B.C., helicopter pilot Nicholas Dale, a man who spent his career flying into danger to help protect others.

The 56-year-old veteran firefighting pilot was honoured with a miles-long procession through Colorado as his body was escorted toward Denver International Airport for his final journey home to his family on Vancouver Island.

Dale died July 12 when the Kaman K-1200 K-MAX helicopter he was flying crashed into the Silver Jack Reservoir while he was conducting aerial water drops on the Gold Mountain Fire in southwestern Colorado.

He was a federally contracted pilot flying for Helicopter Express, helping crews battle one of the state’s most challenging wildfires. He leaves behind his wife and two children in Sooke.

The tribute that followed Dale’s death stretched across communities throughout Colorado, where first responders gathered along Interstate 70 to recognize a Canadian pilot who had travelled south to help protect people, homes and forests.

In Glenwood Springs, firefighters used ladder trucks to suspend a massive American flag over the highway as Dale’s procession passed underneath.

In a social media post, the Glenwood Springs Fire Department said it was honoured to recognize Dale’s service.

“With our ladder trucks displaying a large American flag, we stood at attention in recognition of Nicholas’s service and sacrifice. He gave his life while protecting Colorado communities during the Gold Mountain Fire,” the department said.

“Our thoughts are with Nicholas’s family, loved ones, and all those who served alongside him. We are grateful for his dedication and will honor his sacrifice.”

Firefighters and police officers from communities including Avon, Aurora and Denver also lined the route, standing shoulder-to-shoulder on along the highway and overpasses as the escort travelled through the state.

For those who gathered along Interstate 70, the procession became a powerful reminder of the risks faced by wildfire crews and the connections created when people come together during times of loss.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis has ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff on the day of Dale’s memorial service. The Colorado Fallen Firefighters Foundation has also announced that Dale will be honoured alongside fallen firefighters from the state.

Back home on Vancouver Island, the District of Sooke lowered municipal flags to half-staff to remember a member of the community who lost his life while serving far from home.

Federal investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are reviewing evidence from the wreckage as they work to determine what happened. A preliminary factual report is expected in the coming weeks, while a final determination may take significantly longer.

As Dale’s family prepares to bring him home, communities on both sides of the border are rallying to support them.

Colorado-based Alpine Bank has established the Gold Mountain Fire Pilot Benefit Account, beginning the fund with a US$10,000 contribution. The bank says all public donations will go directly to Dale’s wife and sons, with contributions being accepted through Aug. 31.
