A cherished piece of Victoria’s cultural identity was facing an uncertain future. But when the call went out for help, hundreds of people answered, delivering a fundraising result that could change the future of live music on Vancouver Island. The Victoria Jazz Society says it has surpassed its fundraising target, securing $271,708 in pledges from 620 individuals, businesses and organizations during October. The total exceeded its $250,000 goal, which was set after TD Bank ended its longtime sponsorship of JazzFest International Victoria. The loss of that corporate backing put more than the annual summer festival in jeopardy. The society had warned that without sufficient financial support, it could be forced to discontinue its operations, threatening its year-round concerts and community programming as well. Now, that outlook has changed. The fundraising success means the society can move forward with plans to continue presenting JazzFest International Victoria, concerts throughout the year, free performances and educational programs for aspiring musicians. In a statement announcing the achievement, the Victoria Jazz Society credited the response to the generosity and determination of its supporters. “You are a champion of the arts,” the society said in its release, acknowledging the people who contributed and helped spread the word. There is still an important step before the money can be put to work. The organization will now contact everyone who made a pledge to arrange payment and collect the promised contributions. Once those funds have been received, preparations will begin for the next JazzFest International Victoria, scheduled for the last week of June 2027, along with performances during the year. Founded in 1981, the Victoria Jazz Society has spent more than four decades bringing international, Canadian and local musicians to Greater Victoria stages. Its programming has also created opportunities for emerging artists and audiences to experience live music through free performances and educational initiatives. The fundraising campaign was designed to give the organization the financial breathing room to continue its work while pursuing new sponsorship opportunities and building a more secure future. For now, the result offers something the organization and its supporters were not certain they would have just weeks ago: a path forward. The Victoria Jazz Society accepts donations throughout the year. Contributions of more than $10 are eligible for a charitable tax receipt once paid.
