Surrey police say they impounded 25 vehicles during a four-day traffic enforcement crackdown last week, after the drivers were caught speeding excessively. Surrey Police Service traffic enforcement officers issued the excessive speeding tickets between March 6 and 9, the department said in a news release Friday. Among those charged were five drivers on novice licences. There were also 12 vehicles that were clocked at speeds higher than the highest legal speed in Canada, which is 120 km/h, according to the SPS. Police shared the following specific cases in their release, though they did not specify where in Surrey or on what date each incident occurred: “Travelling at high speeds that vastly exceed the posted speed limit has no place in our community,” the SPS said in the release. “Drivers who make the choice to put the community at risk will be held accountable for their driving behaviour.” Excessive speeding is defined in B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act as exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 km/h. Drivers caught speeding excessively can have their vehicles impounded for seven days on a first offence, and longer if they’ve been caught doing so on any previous occasion within the last two years. The fine for excessive speeding is $483, and drivers are required to pay for the cost of towing and impoundment.
