A woman was critically injured when shots were fired into a home in Surrey early Sunday morning, according to authorities. Police were called to the residence on the 13000 block on 103A Avenue just before 2:45 a.m. for reports of gunfire and found paramedics providing lifesaving first aid to the victim, a South Asian woman in her 20s. “(She) was inside the home at the time of the shots fired and was struck by gunfire,” Surrey Police Service spokesperson Sgt. Lindsey Houghton told CTV News. “She was transported to hospital where she remains in critical condition.” The suspect or suspects arrived in a vehicle and fired shots into the home, Houghton said, adding that no arrests have been made. While no definitive links have been made to extortion-related violence targeting members of the South Asian community, the possibility has not been ruled out and the Major Crimes Section has taken over the case. “They will be liaising with police partners from around the region to see if there might be a nexus to any files that they may have,” Houghton said. Investigators are working to determine whether the home and the woman were the intended targets, which will involve interviewing other residents who were inside at the time of the shooting but were not injured, Houghton said. Obtaining video will be “extremely important” for the investigation, and anyone who has home security cameras or dash cameras is being urged to preserve and review footage.
