More than two dozen communities in B.C. experienced their warmest June 14 on record Sunday, according to Environment Canada. The weather agency says a ridge of high pressure brought above-average temperatures to the province over the weekend, resulting in 26 new daily maximum records being set. The longest standing records to fall were on Vancouver Island, where Duncan and Tofino both surpassed highs not seen since 1916. Duncan broke the 30-degree mark on a June 14 for the first time since recording began way back in 1913, reaching 33.9 C. Other places that saw temperatures above 30 C for the first time on a June 14 included Campbell River, Comox, Gibsons, Powell River, Qualicum Beach, Sechelt, Squamish and Victoria. The warmest record-breaking heat was in Lytton, where the mercury rose to 36.8 C on Sunday. Its previous record for the date was 35.4 C, set in 2002. Pemberton was not far behind, setting a record temperature at 36.3 C. The full list of heat records broken on Sunday follows:
