Tesla driver with kids in car was impaired while going 191 km/h: B.C. RCMP

A B.C. is facing some hefty punishments after being clocked at more than 100 km/h over the speed limit while allegedly impaired—and with kids in the car.

A man driving a Tesla going 111 km/h over the speed limit while he had his kids in the car also failed a roadside breathalyzer test, according to authorities in Metro Vancouver.

Officers with the Maple Ridge RCMP were doing speed enforcement on Lougheed Highway last weekend when they clocked the vehicle going 191 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, a statement from the detachment said. Once pulled over, the man was allegedly “displaying signs of impairment” and subjected to a roadside screening—which he failed.

“The driver advised that he was heading home after spending all day at his children’s extracurricular activities,” says Sgt. Joe Whalley said, in the statement.

“Instead, his family had to find an alternative way home and got to see first-hand the consequences of excessive speeding and impaired driving. We’re thankful that things didn’t turn out worse than they did.”

The father was given a 90-day driving prohibition, fined $483 for excessive speeding, and had his Tesla impounded, according to Mounties, who said the man could be facing additional sanctions.

The Ministry of Children and Family Development was also notified because of the presence of the children in the vehicle.
