Teenager in critical condition after hit-and-run in Richmond, B.C.

A 17-year-old remains in the ICU, the victim of a hit-and-run in Richmond that was caught on video and shared on social media.

A teenager was left with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a driver who did not stop on Saturday in Richmond, B.C., according to authorities.

The Richmond RCMP says officers responded to multiple reports of a “disturbance” just after 11:25 p.m. in the 4200 block of No. 3 Road.

“Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-male unconscious and bleeding,” Mounties wrote in a statement Monday. “Emergency Health Services attended the scene and transported the victim to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.”

Police say the boy was hit by a car following an “altercation” near the roadway which sparked an investigation into an alleged assault causing bodily harm.

Video that emerged on social media over the weekend shows a group of three young people fighting in a parking lot on No. 3 Road, then running into the street. A loud bang can be here when one of them is struck by a car, which continues driving.

“Failing to remain at the scene after a collision is a serious offence,” Const. Rae Hu, an investigator with the Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit, said, in the statement.

‘This is going to alter his life’

The teen has been identified by family as Saanich Grade 12 student and basketball player Myles Mickey. His mother, Theandra Holtby, says he took the ferry from Vancouver Island with his friends to attend an all-ages dance party they’ve been to before.

“From my knowledge, there was an altercation, and Myles was in danger with a few other youth, and he went to run away, and he got hit by a car,” she said.

She told CTV News Mickey is now in a medically induced coma recovering from brain bleeds and multiple broken bones.

“My mind’s just going to how much it’s going to affect his mental health, like all this physical stuff is horrible… but I know that when he realizes the extent of his injuries that it’s going to be really hard on him, because basketball is his passion in life,” Holtby said.

She described her son as a “great big brother” to his three younger siblings.

“He’s very great. My youngest has autism and he is so good with him. He’s so patient, and it just lights me up,” Holtby said.

She urged anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward.

“If you have more information, talk to the police, because this is going to alter his life and everyone in our family’s life forever. Think about it as if it was your little brother or your little sister or your child, and do the right thing and talk to somebody,” Holtby said.

Police believe the suspect vehicle is a dark 2014 to 2019 Ford Fiesta that may have front-end damage.

The Serious Crime Unit is investigating both the hit-and-run and the assault.

The detachment urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has video to call 604-278-1212 and reference police file number 2026-1055.
