A Surrey elementary school where a fire broke out will be closed Monday, according to the district. The blaze at Woodland Park Elementary broke out around 11:30 p.m. Friday, and crews arrived to find smoke coming from a roof overhang at the front of the building, Mike McNamara, assistant chief of operations for Surrey Fire Service, told CTV News Saturday. McNamara said the fire was burning in a “small classroom with a kitchen area,” and crews were able to ensure that was the only room directly affected. He said crews got a “good knockdown,” but flames and heat spread into the ceiling, requiring firefighters to tear up parts of the ceiling to ensure the blaze was out. A spokesperson for the school district confirmed Sunday that assessment of the damage is ongoing, and classes have been cancelled. “The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority,” an emailed statement said. “Families and staff will receive further information directly from the school district regarding next steps and impacts to school operations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. .
