A social media influencer has had his luxury sports car impounded after he was clocked going 150 km/h in a 90 km/h zone, in a coastal community on Vancouver Island. Police say the man was accelerating away from a stoplight on Highway 19, near Wade Road in Lantzville, in an “excessively loud” car when he drew the attention of a nearby BC Highway Patrol officer in an unmarked police vehicle. The officer was prepared with his laser reader “thanks to the loud exhaust”, and recorded the driver barrelling down the road with a passenger in his Nissan GT-R supercar, police said. The driver, who identified himself as a Youtube influencer, and his passenger was polite throughout the traffic stop, said police. He had been carrying a radar detector, an electronic device legal in B.C. that detects if a car’s speed is being monitored by police using a radar gun, and had told the officer he was surprised it had stayed silent. “The driver did not realize that in the hands of a skilled police officer, a laser reader will not be picked up by a detector until it’s too late,” said Crp. Michael McLaughlin. The driver was slapped with an excessive speed ticket for $368, and an automatic seven-day impound. Police didn’t specify the driver’s age, but did say he accepted an offer from the officer to catch a ride to a nearby Tim Hortons, where he would wait to be picked up by his mom. In a video posted to his Instagram account on Monday, influencer Brendan McMartin shared footage of his arrest to his 125,000 followers. McMartin, who has 1.09-million subscribers with a Youtube channel dedicated to his luxury sports car, addressed the officer cordially as they chatted through his driver’s side window. McMartin asked to see the reading on the officer’s detector, before questioning where he had been stationed when he clocked his speeding. During the polite exchange the officer asked if anyone would be able to pick him up, to which McMartin responded, “I’ve got mom coming down from down the Island to come and get me.”
