A home in Surrey’s Newton area that was shot at early Sunday morning belongs to famous Punjabi singer Chani Nattan, sources confirm to CTV News. Social media video shows gunmen firing multiple rounds at the home in the 7800 block of 124 Street at approximately 2:43 a.m. The Surrey Police service said several people were inside at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured. Sources close to Nattan told CTV News they have been advised not to comment on the shooting, as the investigation is ongoing. Surrey Coun. Linda Annis says the community is afraid. “I think anybody that is a public figure around this whole extortion is a target,” said Annis. “This is very scary. And, you know, people should feel safe living in their city.” Lawrence Bishnoi gang The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility on social media, saying the attack occurred because of Nattan’s connection to another famous singer, Saradar Khera. The claims came from one of Bishnoi’s alleged associates, Goldy Dhillon, who also released a video of the shooting, warning the entire music industry. “Any singer who works with or maintains a relationship with Saradar Khera in the future will be solely responsible for their own loss,” read Dhillon’s post. The federal government has declared the Bishnoi gang a terrorist group, and the RCMP has a dedicated task force to combat extortion threats, but Annis says more needs to be done to hold the group accountable. “Both the RCMP and Surrey Police Service have been asking for a special prosecutor to be attached to this, the horrific incidents around extortion that’s happening throughout British Columbia,” Annis said. “I do think the provincial government needs to act on this and fast.” South Asian celebrities attacked in British Columbia The attack comes just 12 days after Bollywood comedian Kapil Sharma’s Kap’s Café was targeted for the third time. The café has been the site of three overnight shootings, the first occurring on July 10 and the third on Oct. 16. Staff were inside at the time of each shooting, but were not injured. Videos of the shootings were widely circulated on social media, similar to the attack on Nattan’s home. Surrey police said that two of the shootings were extortion-related and a marked police vehicle now remains parked outside the café. Earlier this month, a man with alleged ties to the India-based Bishnoi gang was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a shooting and arson attack at the Vancouver Island home of well-known Punjabi musician AP Dhillon. Videos of the attack, including one apparently taken by the shooter, were shared widely on social media, showing at least 14 gunshots fired into the home. The judge found 26-year-old Abjeet Kingra was acting on the instructions of the Bishnoi gang to commit targeted, criminal acts in Canada. Dhillon was unharmed in the attack, posting a message on social media later that day saying: “I’m safe. My people are safe. Thank you to everyone who reached out.
