Township of Langley firefighters spent much of the day Saturday dealing with a large fire in a barn near 256 Street and 24 Avenue. Deputy Chief Cory Parker told CTV News there were no animals in the 75-foot-by-150-foot structure when the fire broke out. Rather, the barn was being used to house machinery, he said. Crews were called to the blaze around 5:15 a.m. and arrived to find the building fully engulfed, Parker said, adding that there are no fire hydrants in the area. Instead, firefighters had to use water tankers to shuttle water to the site. “Once that was established, we were able to get good progress,” Parker said. Roughly 30 firefighters responded to the blaze, and they were able to prevent flames from spreading to another barn at the back of the property, according to Parker. The burning barn, however, was a total loss. The roof collapsed, requiring firefighters to call in heavy equipment to lift it back up and ensure they could put out hot spots. As of 2:30 p.m., some firefighters were still on scene mopping up, Parker said. He said no one was injured in the fire and the cause is still under investigation. It’s too early to know whether there’s anything suspicious about the fire’s origin, Parker said, explaining that fire investigators will not be able to determine the cause until firefighters are done at the scene. Township of Langley environmental programs staff were also called in to monitor water runoff from the site, Parker said.
