High temperature records broken in B.C. for 7th day in a row

Heat warnings remain in place for some regions of B.C. Friday.

For the seventh day in a row, multiple communities across B.C. set or tied high temperature records on Thursday.

Nine places in the province – most of them in the Interior – just saw their hottest Aug. 28 on record, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Thursday’s warmest record-breaking temperature was seen in Cache Creek, where the mercury hit 38.2 C, surpassing the previous record of 36.8 C, which was set eight years ago in 2017.

Fort St. John broke a much older record with its high of 31.1 C. The previous mark of 30.6 C dates back 90 years to 1935.

The full list of records broken Thursday, according to ECCC, follows.

• Bella Bella area: New record of 22.4 C, old record of 22.1 C set in 2013
• Blue River area: New record of 33.7 C, old record of 32.9 C set in 2009
• Burns Lake area: Tied record of 31.2 C set in 2023
• Cache Creek area: New record of 38.2 C, old record of 36.8 C set in 2017
• Clearwater area: New record of 35.7 C, old record of 34.7 C set in 2017
• Clinton area: New record of 32.8 C, old record of 32.5 C set in 2009
• Fort St. John area: New record of 31.1 C, old record of 30.6 C set in 1935
• Puntzi Mountain area: New record of 33.5 C, old record of 31.4 C set in 2023
• Sandspit area: New record of 22.8 C, old record of 21.4 C set in 1998

The temperature records ECCC reports are “derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record,” according to the weather service.

Several areas of the province remained under heat warnings on Friday, including the Fraser Canyon, South Thompson and North Coast regions.

The late August heat wave began breaking daily high temperature records in B.C. last Friday, Aug. 22.
