Police in Langley, B.C., say one man was taken into custody after he allegedly fired a gun at a police drone during an hours-long standoff Monday. The Langley RCMP responded to the 26400 block of 29B Avenue at approximately 1:15 p.m. for a report that a man had discharged a weapon inside a residence, the detachment said in a news release Tuesday. Officers with the heavily armed Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team were deployed to contain the area and began negotiations with the suspect. Residents in the neighbourhood told CTV News they were not allowed to enter or leave their homes during the incident. “While (police were) working to de-escalate the situation, the suspect discharged a firearm at the IERT remotely piloted aircraft system from inside the residence,” the release said. After several hours, the standoff was “safely resolved,” according to police, with the suspect taken into custody and then transported to hospital for assessment. “This was a dynamic and potentially dangerous situation, but thanks to the professionalism and patience of our responding officers and the co-ordinated efforts of the Integrated Emergency Response Team, it was brought to a safe conclusion,” said Sgt. Zynal Sharoom, in the release. “Public safety is our top priority, and we’re grateful that no one was hurt.” The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and a search warrant was being executed on the residence, police said.
