B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation has revised its timeline for reopening a flood-damaged stretch of Highway 3—saying the route between Hope and Princeton will be available for drivers starting Boxing Day. In an update Sunday, the ministry said the move comes after further assessment at the site of a 50-metre washout. “Initially, it was estimated it could take weeks to restore access. However, engineering confirmed less construction is needed, and utilities do not have to be relocated,” the statement said. “Long-term repairs will require significant design and reconstruction. Drivers will remain on the detour alignment until permanent repairs are completed.” A speed limit of 30 km/h will be in effect for the detour. Until the highway reopens, drivers travelling between the Lower Mainland and the southern Interior can use Highway 1 or Highway 5 as alternative routes but are being warned to expect more traffic than usual and to factor in significantly more time for their journeys. “Also, a reminder to drivers that conditions can change quickly. Provincial highways can be closed at any time as conditions warrant,” the ministry’s statement said. “Be prepared for delays and closures by packing warm clothes, snacks and water, and by ensuring your vehicle’s fuel tank or EV battery is full.”
