B.C. Highway Patrol investigators are asking the driver of a car carrier to come forward after failing to remain at the scene of an overpass strike Tuesday. The incident occurred on Highway 1 in Langley just before 4 p.m., the BCHP said in a news release Wednesday. The auto transport trailer was westbound on the highway between Glover Road and 232 Street when it struck the Canadian Pacific Kansas City rail overpass. That same rail bridge has been struck more than a dozen times since 2023, according to data from the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Transit. “The driver did not stop at the scene and has not yet come forward to the police,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, in the release, referring to the latest incident. Asked for more information, McLaughlin clarified in an email to CTV News that it’s “unlikely” the truck became stuck underneath the overpass. “(It’s) more likely that it made contact, caused some damage, and then kept going,” he said. “The investigation is still determining the exact circumstances including whether the truck stopped (and for how long) and how much damage was done to the trailer load.” Any driver who is involved in a crash that may have caused damage to another person’s property—including government property—is required to report the incident to police or the property owner, the BCHP said in its release. McLaughlin encouraged the driver to get in touch with highway patrol officers. “If the truck driver won’t call us, we need witnesses and dash camera video to identify the truck and driver,” he said.
