Commercial truck carrying crane strikes overpass in Langley, BCHP investigating

The B.C. Highway Patrol is looking for witnesses after the fourth overpass strike of the year.

British Columbia has recorded its fourth overpass strike of 2026, after a collision in Langley Thursday afternoon.

A flat deck truck with a crane boom was travelling eastbound on Highway 1 when it struck the CP Rail overpass between Glover Road and 232^nd Street at 2:52 p.m., according to the B.C. Highway Patrol.

“The truck driver did not wait for police at the scene, which is the ideal, but subsequently reached out to police and is co-operating,” BCHP Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said in a statement Friday.

He says the overpass suffered “a small amount of visible damage,” but has been deemed structurally safe by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.

As it investigates the collision, the B.C. Highway Patrol is seeking witnesses and dash camera video of a white commercial flat deck with a crane.

B.C. Highway Patrol says enforcement options will be determined as the investigation continues.

Police will work with Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement to assess potential penalties, as the province continues efforts to curb overpass strikes through stricter enforcement of commercial vehicle rules.

According to the Transportation Ministry, B.C. recorded 29 infrastructure strikes in 2024 and 17 in 2025, with three more in January of this year.

Since 2021, the province says more than $66,000 in fines have been issued for overpass strikes.

While the maximum ticket for operating an over height vehicle is $575, changes that took effect in 2024 also allow the courts to impose much steeper penalties—including fines up to $100,000 and possible jail time—for convictions under the Commercial Transport Act.
