Burrard Street Bridge closes for Sen̓áḵw crane removal

Vancouver’s Burrard Street Bridge closed to vehicular traffic at 7 a.m. Saturday and was scheduled to reopen at noon as crews worked to remove a large construction crane at the south end of the structure.

A second closure, also from 7 a.m. to noon, is scheduled for Sunday.

All vehicle lanes were slated to be closed to traffic, while the bridge’s east sidewalk would remain open to pedestrians crossing the bridge.

Northbound cyclists were allowed to ride their bikes in the bridge’s east side bike lane, but those heading south were required to dismount and walk their bikes along the sidewalk, according to a statement from the city.

Buses that cross the Burrard Bridge were re-routed for the closures.

The work is related to the Indigenous-led Sen̓áḵw development, which is slated to include more than 6,000 mostly rental homes in 11 towers on Squamish Nation reserve land at the foot of the bridge.

Last summer, all three towers in the project’s first phase reached their full heights, and the nation told The Canadian Press the buildings would open with 1,400 new homes this year.
