A man from Vernon, B.C., did a triple-take after scanning his Lotto 6/49 ticket and learning he won $500,000. Randall Dunn said he didn’t immediately trust the self-scan machine, and sought verification from a human. “I checked three times and then took it up to the counter because I wasn’t sure!” Dunn told the BC Lottery Corporation after claiming the Extra prize from the Aug. 20 draw. Once he was confident the jackpot was legit, he shared the good news with his husband. “He was in disbelief until he saw the claim slip. He yelled ‘yahoo!’ and then we did a little happy dance,” Dunn told the BCLC. The couple plan to use some of the windfall on a vacation to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, next year. After that, Dunn and his husband look forward to having some extra money in the bank as they prepare for retirement. The odds of winning the $500,000 Lotto 6/49 Extra prize are roughly one in 3.7 million.
