A Surrey high school teacher has been disciplined after showing students R-rated movies, spraying them with a water gun and sharing a racist meme. The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation posted a consent resolution earlier this month, outlining examples of Raymond Alejandro Rojas Peralta’s professional misconduct during the 2022-23 school year. According to the bulletin, Rojas Peralta showed his Grade 9 class the movies “Scream” and “The Conjuring,” both of which are rated “R.” The regulator also found he showed one Grade 9 student a meme “that involved a racial stereotype” and sprayed students in the school hallway using one student’s water gun. Rojas Peralta also attempted to discuss the school district’s investigation into him with a student in a hallway, according to the agreement. Then, after learning that student had transferred out of his class, he made “an inappropriate comment” about that student to their peer. Rojas Peralta received a letter of discipline from his school district in June 2023 and was required to serve a one-day suspension and complete a course on creating a positive learning environment. The BCCTR launched an investigation into Rojas Peralta later that year and proposed a consent agreement in July 2024. Under that agreement, signed last month, Rojas Peralta must complete a second course on reinforcing respectful professional boundaries by April 5, 2027. The commissioner says it based its discipline off Rojas Peralta’s failures to role model appropriate educator behavior, to maintain appropriate boundaries with students and to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
