Animal cruelty charges will be recommended after a severely matted, injured and shivering dog was found lying in the snow, according to the B.C. SPCA. Last month, an animal protection officer was sent to a remote property near Prince Rupert and was met with a “heartbreaking sight,” the charity said in a news release Tuesday. “The snow around the dog had turned brown because of how dirty her fur was,” said Alex Schare, regional manager of animal protection services, in the statement. “It was obvious that her basic needs had not been met in quite some time.” Removing the matted fur, which was “full of dirt, feces and urine,” took hours and required sedation, the B.C. SPCA said. The dog, a seven-year-old poodle mix, was also unable to put any weight on her left hind leg—which will have to be amputated due to an old injury that never properly healed. Despite being isolated and neglected, the dog is not wary of people, the statement from the charity said, adding she is prone to “demanding snuggles.” The pup has been named Pixie and adopted by a foster family.
