Police in Victoria are urging drivers to exercise more caution behind the wheel, saying a cyclist or pedestrian has been struck “every single day” in the city so far this year. The department issued a statement Monday saying drivers have a “heightened duty of care” to ensure safety on local roads, noting eight pedestrians, seven cyclists and one scooter rider are among those who have been struck. “These are not statistics. These are people –your sister, mother, brother, aunts, kids, colleagues, uncles—all walking to work, cycling to school, crossing the street, or simply moving through our community. Each collision carries the potential for life-altering injury or loss,” the statement from VicPD said. “A moment of distraction, speed, or impatience can have irreversible consequences.” The department did not provide further details, such as the extent of injuries suffered. Motorists are being urged to watch for cyclists, yield to pedestrians and eliminate distractions, including the use of cellphones.
