5 tiny kittens saved from ‘horrible fate’ at Abbotsford waste facility: B.C. SPCA

A group of weeks-old kittens were found moments before disaster at a waste management facility in Abbotsford, according to the B.C. SPCA, who say the animals will be up for adoption soon following the fateful rescue.

On Feb. 13, a worker was loading cardboard into a compactor when he heard faint cries from underneath the pile, the charity recounted in a media release Friday. Upon closer investigation, he found two tiny kittens buried under the cardboard.

“We are incredibly grateful he found them. He saved the kittens from the most horrible fate,” Sarah Ringer-Vennard manager of the B.C. SPCA Abbotsford, said in the release.

The employee brought the two kittens to the B.C. SPCA, as well as a third he found later that day. And on Family Day, Feb. 16, the worker found two more kittens at the site.

The felines were so young they required bottle feeding, and came to the B.C. SPCA with discharge in their eyes caused by upper respiratory infections, the organization said, adding all five kittens received antibiotics and are now fully recovered.

“They are well socialized and just love people. They have been busy exploring their fosters’ homes,” Ringer-Vennard said.

The kittens have been named Dave, Steven, Dorito, Cheeto and Annie. The B.C. SPCA says that Dave is the largest but the gentlest, Steven is “brave and curious,” Dorito is small but has a “big voice,” Cheeto is calm and loves snuggles, and Annie “lives to chase and play with all her brothers.”

The kittens will be available for adoption in about six weeks, when they are large enough.
