A two-year-old child is in hospital after falling into Whonnock Lake in Maple Ridge earlier this week, according to local Mounties. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. Monday, Maple Ridge RCMP said in a news release Wednesday. The call came in as a “medical emergency,” police said, adding that responding officers “immediately assisted in life-saving measures for a child who was in medical distress after allegedly falling into the water.” Officers were relieved in their efforts by arriving paramedics, who took the child to hospital by air ambulance. The toddler was still hospitalized as of Wednesday, police said. “Police secured the area and took a number of statements from witnesses and individuals on scene and are continuing to investigate,” the news release reads. “The investigation is still in its early stages. Our thoughts are with the child and their family at this time.” Police asked anyone who has information about the incident and has not already spoken to investigators to contact Maple Ridge RCMP at 604-463-6251 and quote file number 2026-14366. RCMP Victim Services are also available for those who witnessed or are affected by the incident, police said.
