Two people were killed and a driver was arrested after a crash on Highway 1 in Burnaby early Wednesday morning that closed the busy route for about 12 hours. B.C. Highway Patrol says a pickup truck collided with a four-door sedan in the westbound lanes just before 12:15 a.m. Two passengers in the sedan were declared dead at the scene, and the driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to police. The pickup truck driver was arrested and taken to the Burnaby RCMP detachment. Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. “This is a tragic incident that has had devastating consequences,” said B.C. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano, in a news release. ”Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and everyone affected by this collision. Investigators are working hard to collect evidence and determine exactly what happened.” The westbound lanes of Highway 1 were closed between Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street until about 12:30 p.m. for the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash-cam video from Highway 1 in either direction between First Avenue and Gaglardi Way from 12 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. is urged to contact BCHP at 604-526-9744.
