Toronto under special weather statement as Alberta Clipper brings more snow to the city

A special weather statement was issued for the City of Toronto on Tuesday morning before the arrival of the weather system.

The national weather agency was warning of “reduced visibility” in areas where there is heavier snowfall.

“Snow associated with an Alberta Clipper will sweep across the area this evening and tonight. Highest snowfall amounts are expected to be along the Oak Ridges Moraine,” Environment Canada’s advisory read.

“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Prepare for deteriorating travel conditions. Allow extra time for travel.”

CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said the snow would ease at around 3 a.m. on Wednesday but “flurries will linger” for the start of the Wednesday morning commute.

“Skies should brighten a bit on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday will be mainly cloudy but close to seasonable.”

‘Temperature rollercoaster’

The snow comes as Toronto sees a “mini temperature rollercoaster this week,” Coulter noted.

“Northwesterly winds this morning are tapping into a very cold air mass sitting to our north, however, the winds will shift and keep things a bit more comfortable tonight,” he said.

Environment Canada is calling for a high of -6 C on Tuesday, feeling closer to -15 with the wind chill.

Wednesday and Thursday will see more seasonable daytime highs of 1 C and 0 C on each day respectively.

“Friday will be bright and mild. Saturday will be very comfortable with some limited sunshine,” Coulter said.

Environment Canada is calling for a high 4 C on Friday and 7 C on Saturday.

Cold air “blasts back in” on Sunday with flurries expected on Monday, Coulter added.

Daytime highs of -5 C are expected on both Sunday and Monday.
