A property owner has been convicted in connection with a house fire in Brampton three years ago that left a pregnant woman and her three-year-old girl dead. The fire broke out at 47 Jade Cres., at around 11 p.m. on June 2, 2023. Crews found one person outside the home with fire injuries and rescued two others inside. Brampton Fire Services said a woman who was pregnant was pronounced dead at the scene while her child died in the hospital days later. Officials confirmed that the three victims lived in the basement. According to the City of Brampton, fire investigators found that the property at 47 Jade Cres., which was registered to only have two units, had been converted to four units without proper permits. Those units were then rented despite not meeting the requirements under the Ontario Building Code and Fire Code, the city said. As a result, Brampton Fire and Emergency Services laid seven charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act against the owner related to fire separations and the installation and maintenance of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Officials previously said there were no working smoke alarms on the first storey and in the basement of the home. The City of Brampton revealed in a news release on Tuesday that the owner was sentenced to 135 days of consecutive custody and two years of probation, which included a condition that they do not commit the same offence or any related offence. The owner was also ordered to pay $50,000 in fines and $10,000 in victim surcharges.
