The number of vehicles stolen in Peel Region in the first half of 2026 is down 10 per cent from the same period last year, according to new data released Monday. In a news release, the province said 2,790 vehicles were stolen between January 1, 2026 and June 30, 2026, down from 3,089 during the first half of 2025. The updated data was announced at a news conference on Monday morning, where the provincial government confirmed it would put an additional $6 million toward the Preventing Auto Thefts (PAT) Grant Program. The funding would support 22 police projects across Ontario, including one in Peel Region, which will receive $300,000 in new funding. “Auto theft is down across Ontario because our government is making it a priority and is giving police the tools and resources they need to go after the organized criminals who are behind it,” Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner said in a news release. “While we are seeing real progress, we will not let up. That is why we are doubling down, further investing in our police services, and supporting their work to disrupt criminal networks and protect Ontario families and communities.” The province says vehicle thefts have declined “significantly” in Ontario since 30,134 vehicle thefts were reported in 2023. In 2025, Ontario saw just 19,319 thefts, according to data from Équité Association.
