One person has been killed in a head-on collision in Hamilton that sent three others to the hospital, including a toddler with critical injuries, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say. The crash happened in the town of Dundas, Ont., on Tuesday shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Highway 5, just east of Highway 8. In a news release, police said their initial investigation indicates that a pickup truck, operated by a 20-year-old man from Millgrove, Ont., was heading westbound when it collided with a minivan being driven by a 35-year-old man from Cambridge, Ont., that was travelling eastbound. As a result, a 32-year-old woman in the front passenger seat of the minivan was pronounced deceased at the scene. A two-year-old boy seated in the back of the minivan was taken to a local children’s hospital with critical injuries. The two drivers were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, they said. Charges are pending. “An extensive on-scene investigation was conducted with assistance from the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team, including OPP Technical Collision Investigators and Reconstructionist,” the OPP said. This investigation is ongoing. Highway 5 closed due to investigation Motorists are being advised to expect a “lengthy” closure on Highway 5 between Highway 8 and Middletown Road, notably between the roundabout at Peter’s Corners and Middletown Road. The closure is expected to last around three hours, until mid-afternoon, police said. Drivers should avoid that area, they said.
