House fire in Ajax leaves one person dead

One person is dead following a house fire in Ajax later Friday evening.

Durham Regional Police said they responded to a home in the area of Taunton Road East and Salem Road North just after 11 p.m. for an armed man who was threatening members of his family.

When officers arrived, they saw the house on fire.

Police said officers and firefighters removed several people from the home and evacuated neighbouring residences.

One person was found deceased inside the home, police said. No other injuries were reported.

The identity of the person has not been released.

Drone footage shows that the roof of the home has collapsed as a result of the fire.

The cause, origin and circumstances of the fire are unknown.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was notified and is at the scene to investigate.
