A severe thunderstorm warning issued late Monday afternoon for Toronto and parts of the GTA has been lifted. At around 4:15 p.m., meteorologists at Environment Canada said they’re tracking a severe thunderstorm that is capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to quarter-size hail, and heavy rain in the City of Toronto as well as in Pickering - Oshawa - Southern Durham Region and Vaughan - Richmond Hill – Markham. The storm moved eastward through Toronto at 25 km/h. The national weather agency said it may result in 25 to 50 mm of rain. “Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility,” Environment Canada said. The locations in its path included York, Cherry Beach, the Outer Harbour, and Ashbridges Bay. The national agency warned of the likelihood of local utility outages. Damage to roofs, fences, soft shelters, or trees was also possible, it said. “There is a risk of injury. Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail,” the warning read. Emergency Management Ontario also recommended that people take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. “Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging hail, wind or rain,” said Environment Canada.
