Eight people have been taken to the hospital with minor injuries following a chemical incident at a condo complex in North York on Sunday night, say Toronto paramedics.

The incident happened in the Willowdale neighbourhood, at 78/80 Harrison Garden Blvd., which is just east of Yonge Street, and north of Highway 401. This three-tower, high-rise residence is connected by a common lobby and ground floor.

Emergency responders say they were called to that area just after 5 p.m.

Paramedics told CP24 that they assessed a total of 11 patients, eight of whom were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Toronto Fire Services said that they attended the scene for an issue in the pool area involving cleaning chemicals, adding that when crews arrived they “isolated the area and ventilated the building.”

‘Chemical hazard’

In a post on X, Toronto police say they were called to a residential building near Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue East just after 5 p.m. after receiving reports of a “chemical hazard.”

A media officer later said the incident was “possibly related to pool chemicals.”

Some evacuations have been done and several TTC shelter buses have been brought in, officials noted.

Currently, Harrison Garden is closed between Humberstone Drive and Oakburn Crescent.
