‘Vladdy Jr. is your daddy’: This is how U.S. media are reacting to the Toronto Blue Jays ALDS win

The Toronto Blue Jays are headed to the American League Championship Series after beating the New York Yankees in their first round of the playoffs.

Toronto dominated New York in Game 4 Wednesday night, coming away with a 5-2 road win after dropping Game 3.

Here’s how U.S. media are reacting to the result:

‘DAAAAAA YANKEES LOSE!’

Slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. shared a moment with David “Big Papi” Ortiz following Wednesday night’s win, in which the former delivered his impression of the hall of famer’s well-known Yankees chirp.

“Daaaaaa Yankees lose,” Guerrero Jr. exclaimed during his interview with the Boston Red Sox legend. Ortiz, who serves as an MLB commentator on Fox, laughed out loud at the chirp, to the playful dismay of his co-panelists Yankees greats Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter.

Ortiz’s quote, a riff on Yankees play-by-play announcer John Sterling‘s “Theeeeee Yankees win,” first went viral in 2017after New York lost to the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the 2017 ALCS.

Guerrero Jr. and Ortiz continued to repeat the phrase several times before the interview wrapped up.

‘Vladdy Jr. is your daddy’

Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s Godfather, reacted to the Jays win Wednesday night with an anecdote about his time in the majors.

“For so many years, those fans in New York, bother me with asking me, ‘Pedro, who’s your daddy?’” the former Red Sox pitcher recalled.

“And now I finally realize, who their daddy is...my Godson. Vladdy Jr. is their daddy! And that is a fact!”

Martinez, who won the World Series with Ortiz and the Red Sox in 2004, previously played with the Montreal Expos alongside Guerrero Jr.’s father.

‘BOYS OF BUMMER’

The New York Post didn’t hold back with its reaction to the Yankees loss in Game 4.

The back page of the publication’s Thursday morning print simply read: “BOYS OF BUMMER”

“Yanks run without title up to 16 years as magic disappears,” the magazine wrote on X.

‘The Yankees are the frauds’

New-York based WFAN Sports Radio posted a video of host Chris McMonigle, who congratulated Vladimir Guerrero Jr. following the Game 4 win, before bashing his own team’s lacklustre offence.

“Another season over. Just watching Vladimir Guerrero Jr. celebrating. Good for him. He deserves it. He’s not the fraud. They’re not the frauds anymore. The Yankees are the frauds. This offence was a fraud,” he said, noting the Yankees had the advantage due to the Jays exclusive use of their bullpen to start Game 4.

‘Congrats to the Yankees’

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was quick to jab the Yankees following the Game 4 loss.

“Congrats to the @Yankees. Another successful season for the Bombers! Nobody can ever take away that wildcard series celebration!" he wrote sarcastically on X, accompanied by a picture of New York’s champagne-soaked celebration after beating the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card Series.

The well-known Red Sox fan previously said that the Yankees should be “embarrassed” for the way they marked their Wild Card win, calling their celebrations “gross” and a “disgrace” to the franchise.

‘One of the worst constructions of a roster I’ve ever seen’: A-Rod on Yankees

In the aftermath of the Yankees’ loss, Alex Rodriguez, who won the World Series with New York the last time they hoisted the Commissioner’s Trophy in 2009, said Manager Aaron Boone is the “least to blame” for Wednesday’s loss.

“He’s got a lot of talent (in the lineup), but for me personally, one of the worst constructions of a roster I’ve ever seen,” he said on the MLB on Fox broadcast.

“It’s just a very, very difficult hand for Boone and honestly they (the Yankees) were exposed against a much better Jays team.”
