Toronto-area hospitals welcome first babies of 2026

James was born at 12:01 at Cortellucci Vaughan hospital, and a boy was born at Etobicoke General at 12:28 a.m.

It’s 2026 and hospitals in and around Toronto are welcoming some of the first babies of the new year.

Brampton couple Jasveer Kaur and Jaswinder Singh Dhaliwal met their son for the first time at exactly midnight, making him one of the first babies delivered this year in the Greater Toronto Area.

The 6-lbs., 12-oz bundle of joy was born at William Osler Health System’s Brampton Civic Hospital.

“Osler extends its best wishes and congratulations to the new parents and their family, and to all the families who are welcoming new babies at this special time,” the hospital network said in a news release.

At North York General in Toronto, parents Vivian and Nelson Omeziri welcomed their baby girl Olana Alora as the clock struck 12 a.m. Mount Sinai Hospital said it also delivered a baby at midnight, named Nathaniel, though it’s unclear which of the three babies was born first.

Brampton parents Stephanie and Brydon were introduced to their son less than two minutes later at Mackenzie Health’s Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. Baby James was born at 12:01 a.m. weighing 7 lbs., 8 oz.

At 12:13 a.m., Rielly Patricia Thornton was welcomed by parents Haley O’Donnell and Brandon Thornton. Lakeridge Health said the 8-lbs., 8-oz baby was delivered at Oshawa Hospital.

“We feel so blessed to open 2026 on such a profound note,” O’Donnell said in a news release. “We know Baby Rielly is a lucky girl, and we’re excited for the many wonderful moments ahead.”

Two minutes later, Trillium Health Partners said, a baby boy named Waris was delivered at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga. Trillium says both baby and mom are doing well.

Not to be outdone by his slightly older contemporaries, a baby boy was born at 12:28 a.m. to another Brampton couple, Manveer Sidhu and Dharminder Singh Swagh. Delivered at Etobicoke General Hospital, the baby weighs 6 lbs., 8 oz.

Speaking to CP24, Sidhu--whose birthday also happens to be Jan. 1-- said she was in labour for about 24 hours leading up to the birth of her first son.

“I feel grateful that my New Year starts with my little one,” she said.

As for now, the couple says they’re still undecided on his name: “We have a few names with us. We’re still working on which one we want. But we might decide by the end of today,” she said.

In Markham, parents Fatima and Fahad welcomed a 6-lbs., 11-oz baby boy who was born at 1:42 a.m. at Markham Stouffville Hospital.
