Arrest made after 3 people shot at with pellet gun outside Toronto synagogue, police investigating whether it could be linked to similar incident

One person has been arrested after three people standing outside a North York, Ont., synagogue were shot at with a replica firearm on Thursday night, Toronto police say.

“Excellent investigative work by our officers to make a very quick arrest in this disturbing incident,” Chief Myron Demkiw said in a post on social media Friday afternoon.

Police say that they are investigating whether it could be connected to a similar incident targeting Jewish residents last week.

The latest incident took place outside a synagogue on Bathurst Street near Wilson Avenue just before 11 p.m. on Thursday.

Police say that the victims were standing in the area when they were shot at with a replica firearm, suspected to be a pellet gun, from a vehicle.

One person was struck as a result and sustained minor injuries, police say.

Police did not immediately provide charges or other details about the person who was arrested.

The incident comes after three people, who police say were “visibly identifiable members of the Jewish community,” were shot at with a replica firearm near Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue on April 30.

Police have previously shared video footage of that incident and have said that it is being investigated as a “hate-motivated incident.”

In a statement provided to CP24 on Friday, police said that officers are “speaking to witnesses and seeking video footage” in connection with the latest incident and are working to determine whether it could be linked to the April 30 shooting.
