SIU investigating Etobicoke car crash that injured Toronto cop, 2 others

Police are investigating the cause of a collision in Etobicoke that sent a 19-year-old, 16-year-old and a police officer to hospital.

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a car crash in Etobicoke Tuesday morning injured three people, including a Toronto cop.

Police said emergency crews were called to the scene at Albion Road and Kipling Avenue at approximately 10:15 a.m. for a crash involving a Toronto police vehicle.

The 19-year-old driver of the civilian vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Their 16-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries. Police said the officer’s injuries are also minor.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear but a spokesperson for Toronto police said that it is not believed to be related to a vehicle pursuit.

In an update, police said that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and will be investigating.

According to the SIU, the cruiser was travelling north on Kipling Avenue when it collided with a vehicle travelling west on Albion Road at the intersection.

The agency has assigned three investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency called in to investigate any interaction between a police officer and a member of the public that results in death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.

Road closures are in effect in the area.
