Man suffers life-threatening injuries in shooting downtown: Toronto police

A man in his 20s has been taken to hospital with series injuries after shooting in St. James Town.

One man suffered critical injuries after a shooting in Toronto’s downtown core on Monday morning, police say.

It happened near Bleecker and Wellesley streets at around 2:45 a.m.

Toronto police said officers were flagged down by an injured person and a male victim in his 20s was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. His condition has since worsened and his injuries are now believed to be life-threatening.

In a post on social media, police said it was “initially unclear how the victim was injured,” but it was later determined that he was shot.

The suspect fled prior to the arrival of officers, police added.

Investigators were not able to provide a suspect description.

There is currently a large police presence in the area and the investigation is ongoing.

Const. Stephanie Miceli said police are still trying to determine where exactly the shooting took place.

“The victim was located outside, however it is not completely clear where exactly the shooting occurred,” she said Monday.

“We are asking anyone in the area who may have seen or heard anything to contact police, as well as local businesses in the area if they can check their surveillance video.”

She said it is early on in the investigation but “all necessary resources” are being applied to apprehend a suspect.

“We understand that incidents like this are very concerning to the public and we want to reassure the community that we are dedicating all necessary resources in order to find the person or people responsible for this,” Miceli added.

“Any sort of information, no matter how small, it could be helpful in this investigation. So please get in touch with investigators.”
