Toronto under special weather statement, up to 10 cm of snow possible

Toronto and its neighbouring regions are expected to be hit by significant snow beginning Saturday night.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto, advising of strong winds in addition to the snow.

Parts of Peel, Halton and Niagara regions are also under the special weather statement, as is the City of Hamilton.

According to the advisory, five to 10 centimetres is possible between late Saturday and Sunday morning, which could lead to challenging travel conditions.

Those areas could also see strong southwest winds, possibly gusting 60 to 70 km/h.

“On Sunday morning, snow is expected to mix with or transition over to rain in most areas. If the precipitation remains as snow, then accumulations may exceed 10 centimetres,” Environment Canada said.

“Local utility outages are possible. Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”

Yellow warning for York and Durham regions

Meanwhile, other parts of the Greater Toronto Area are under a yellow warning for snowfall, according to Environment Canada.

Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill and the rest of York Region will see heavy snow beginning Saturday night, as will Durham Region, including Pickering, Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax.

A yellow warning, according to Environment Canada, means hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption or health impacts.

Those areas could see snowfall amounts near 10 centimetres, Environment Canada said, noting that 15 to 20 centimetres is possible over the higher terrain north of Lake Ontario.

“Travel will likely be challenging. Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will likely be reduced at times. Allow extra time for travel,” the advisory read.

Caledon and some parts of Halton Region, including Milton and Halton Hills.

Environment Canada said the snow is expected to taper off on Sunday afternoon for those areas.
