Driver who caused a collision that resulted in a light pole striking and killing a pedestrian identified

Toronto police have identified a man accused of causing a fatal collision in North York last week, after a light pole was struck and fell on a pedestrian.

Police said on Mar. 6, just before 6:45 p.m., a 19-year-old woman was driving a Volkswagen Tiguan eastbound on Steeles Avenue West at the same time a male driving an Acura MDX was travelling westbound on the same street.

The Volkswagen attempted to make a left turn at Gerry Fitzgerald Drive, police said, when the Acura allegedly “disobeyed a traffic signal,” causing a collision in the intersection.

The Acura then lost control and struck a utility pole, which then fell onto a 62-year-old male pedestrian.

The driver of the Acura abandoned the car and fled on foot. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, police identified Walter Omar Montes De Oca Munoz, 32, of King City, as the driver.

He is wanted for failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death and dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death.

He is described at five-foot-seven with a muscular build and dark brown hair.
