Charges laid against three suspects in the 2025 shooting death of 15-year-old Jahkai Jack in Toronto’s west end have been dropped. The Ontario Ministry of Attorney General has confirmed to CP24 that the charges against 20-year-old Abdul Yeberebaba, 19-year-old Jayden Samuel-James, and 21-year-old Rajveer Gill were withdrawn on Wednesday. Toronto police had charged Yeberebaba with second-degree murder in Jahkai’s death, while Samuel-James and Gill were charged with accessory after the fact. The ministry did not say why the charges were withdrawn, but the Toronto Star reported that a Crown attorney told a judge on Wednesday that there was no possibility of a conviction. The shooting occurred on June 7, 2025, near Buttonwood and Charlton Settlement avenues in the city’s Mount Dennis neighbourhood. Toronto police Det.-Sgt. Phillip Campbell previously said that Jahkai and a couple of his friends went to that area where a rap video was reportedly being filmed. “There was an altercation, and Jahkai ended up getting shot,” Campbell said. “He was 15 years old, he was not involved in gangs, he was not engaged in criminal activity, he was simply a young person meeting friends on a summer night.” Toronto police respond In a statement to CP24 on Wednesday, Toronto Police Service said it is aware of the charges being withdrawn in the case. “The Toronto Police Service laid charges based on the evidence available at the time and reasonable grounds to believe the accused had committed the offences,” spokesperson Stephanie Sayer said.
