Powerful winds Saturday night are being blamed for the death of a little. The three year old was walking with her family in front of the Calgary Tower on 9th Avenue.

As the family of four was walking, high winds kicked up, causing construction materials to blow off of a building under construction across the street. A 3 metre wide peice of metal roofing material fell to the ground, striking 3 members of the family.

The little girl was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult male and a 7 year old boy were each taken to hospital. Both are reported to be in non life-threatening condition.

It was a devestating call for emergency personel called to the scene. .

Deb Bergeson from the Calgary Fire Department tells CTV News, firefighters had to make sure the area was safe, before the investigation could be conducted. "It was still windy when fire crews arrived and they had to make sure the area was safe for people to enter the area without any additional injuries" Says Bergeson. "We brought our heavy rescue specialists in. They specialize in securing building materials and shoring up the roof in these types of situations."

9th Avenue was shut down between 1st and Centre Street. It was re-opened just after midnight Saturday.
