ALVISO, Calif. - TiVo digital video recorders, which have been sold in the United States for several years, will soon be available in Canada, manufacturer TiVo Inc. said Monday.

The devices store TV shows on a hard drive and allow users to pause and rewind live TV. They can also show instant replay and slow motion, and record two shows at once.

The TiVo Series 2 DT DVR is optimized for cable TV households and holds up to 80 hours of standard-definition content, the company said.

"TiVo's move into Canada represents a natural, important progression for our business as we continue to make sustained progress across international markets," said Joshua Danovitz, a TiVo vice-president.

The device will be available in early December at major Canadian retailers including Best Buy, the Brick, London Drug and Future Shop for a suggested retail price of $199, plus subscription fees.

TiVo will not be available in Quebec immediately.

Similar gadgets - also called personal video recorders or PVRs - are available for sale or rent from other manufacturers and TV providers in Canada, including Bell Canada and Rogers Communications.
