Canada has hosted the summit on four previous occasions since joining the G8 in 1976.

The first time around, the event was held jointly in Ottawa and Montebello, Que., for three days in July 1981.

Seven years later, G8 leaders met in Toronto for three days in June 1988.

In 1995, the G8 summit was held in Halifax, for a three-day period in June.

The two-day, June 2002 G8 summit was in Kananaskis, Alta., about 90 kilometres west of Calgary.
