A Tim Hortons manager who helped deliver a baby in a washroom says he had a feeling swift action was needed when a pregnant patron mentioned she wasn't feeling well.

Concerned by the admission, Aaron Hayes says he offered the woman a seat in his Windsor, Ont. coffee shop as well as some water. But by then, the expectant customer was headed elsewhere.

"She said 'No, no!' and just ran to the washroom," Hayes told CTV's Canada AM on Wednesday. "Everything happened after that."

Shireen Anderson, 32, had mentioned to shop employees on Tuesday that she was due to deliver soon but after her sudden departure to the washroom, "soon" became "right now."

The store dialed a 911 dispatcher immediately, said Hayes.

Meanwhile, a female employee named Judy Glenn, who was working behind the counter, ordered her co-workers to find towels and joined Anderson on the restroom floor.

"(She) laid her out comfortable or as comfortable as you can in the washroom and said ‘Aaron, Aaron, the head's out. What do I do?'" recalled Hayes.

Taking instructions from a 911 operator, Hayes said he urged Anderson to relax while asking Glenn to hold the baby's head. Within moments, little Azauria was born.

"We wrapped her the best we could in towels, used cloths to wipe her face and nose, made sure she was breathing and then the ambulance showed up," said Hayes.

Staff at the Windsor Hospital later confirmed that the seven-pound, 14-ounce girl was healthy.

From her hospital bed Tuesday, Anderson couldn't help but laugh at the unusual incident.

"As it was happening, I was like, ‘I'm having a baby at Tim Hortons, is this really happening? I'm in the bathroom at Tim Hortons. I'm not at a hospital.' I was supposed to have my coaches and everything and it didn't work out like that," she told CTV Toronto.

Nurses at the hospital have started giving the baby nicknames, including Sugar and Timmy.

Back at the coffee shop, Glenn received the rest of the day off for her quick thinking.

As for Hayes? He says he's still reeling from all the excitement.

"It happened so fast, but we didn't have many options," he said. "We're happy that the baby's fine and the mother's doing well too."
