KABUL, Afghanistan - Three NATO service members were killed in Afghanistan on Friday, the coalition said.

In southern Afghanistan, one service member was killed by a bomb and the other by an insurgent attack, NATO said in separate statements. A third was killed by a bomb in the eastern part of the country. NATO gave no further details or nationalities.

The deaths bring the total number of NATO fatalities in Afghanistan this year to 615.

NATO and Afghan troops have been trying to push Taliban fighters from their strongholds in southern Afghanistan since July but bombings and attacks remain a daily occurrence.

In eastern Afghanistan's Khost province, an Afghan and NATO force captured the Haqqani network's shadow governor for Spera district during an overnight operation.

The shadow governor had coordinated the facilitation of foreign fighters from Pakistan and directed ambush attacks in the district, NATO said.

The Haqqani network is an autonomous wing of the Taliban with close ties to al Qaeda. Its leadership is based in Pakistan.
